Who We Are

The Special Equestrians Therapeutic Riding Association was born out of necessity and a discussion in 2003.  With a solid and dedicated board of directors, trained instructors and its charitable status all in place, SpEqTRA began with five students in 2005.  We now service over 50 clients, steadily increasing our numbers over the years at a manageable rate.

Research has shown the beneficial results therapeutic riding provides in rehabilitation following stroke, head injury, and traumatic brain damage and has shown critical improvements in the treatment of mental health issues and learning disabilities, through the human-animal bonding process.

The horse provides rhythmical, multidimensional movement that facilitates many changes in the rider, improving balance, coordination, muscle strength, muscle tone, self-confidence and self-esteem, attention span, independence and social integration.

In the words of a client and a special young lady with cerebral palsy, “Riding just gives me courage really, it makes me feel really proud of myself.”

SpEqTRA provides individual programming focusing on individual achievements, meeting each participant at their level of ability and encouraging them to reach new goals.

International research continues to advance therapeutic riding programs in Canada, making an important difference in the lives of children and adults with mobility, congitive, visual, and hearing impairments.
